Design Proposal Form

ANITA™ Mox is a robust, single-stage ammonia and total nitrogen removal biofilm process based on the Moving Bed Bioreactor ( MBBR) or Integrated Fixed-film Activated Sludge (IFAS) platform utilizing the AnoxK™ 5 media to cultivate anammox and ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) enriched biomass for mainstream deammonification and sidestream deammonification applications. It is the simplest and most stable technology in the market in terms of operation and maintenance in treating centrate or filtrate from either conventional anaerobic digestion (AD) or AD following thermal hydrolysis process (THP).

The ANITA Mox process combines nitritation (through AOBs) with anaerobic ammonia oxidation (through anammox) in a single-stage reactor. It is one of the most energy efficient and cost-effective solutions in removing ammonia and total nitrogen from waste streams containing high ammonia concentrations. Compared to the conventional nitrification/denitrification process, the ANITA Mox process has the following benefits:

  • Three times lower in total cost per pound of nitrogen removed

  • Much smaller footprint with high loading/removal rates

  • 90% less sludge production

  • 60% less in energy consumption

  • No external carbon required

AMMONIA REMOVAL

Veolia's patented control strategy and design can help achieve an ammonia removal rate higher than 90% and a total nitrogen removal rate in the range of 75 to 85%, if desired. With a given footprint or volume, the system can also be designed to maximize the total pounds of nitrogen removed with higher loading/removal rates but slightly lower percent removal rates.

Compared to other deammonification technologies, the advantages of ANITA Mox include:

  • Simplest to operate and maintain with robust and forgiving design/operating parameters

  • Significantly more stable process

  • Can work with both shallow (less than 10 ft) and high side water depth (great than 26 ft)

  • Robust media-based solution eliminates the risk of anammox washout without the need for anammox/MLSS separation equipment

  • Small footprint and easily expandable by adding media or converting MBBR to IFAS

  • More experience and installations in the US municipal market than any other suppliers

  • Seed media readily available from multiple large US-based bio-farms for quick startup

  • Proven robustness

Full scale performance data has demonstrated ANITA Mox's ability to withstand:

  • Inhibitory effects of recalcitrant COD and complex nitrogen compounds generated by THP or other special processes
  • Variations in dewatering schedules and dewatering starts/stops
  • High TSS and Swings in TSS (between 1,500 and 17,000 mg/L) without the need of pretreatment unit process
  • High polymer residual
  • High NO2-N residual with less NOB suppression requirements
  • Wide DO concentration and PH ranges
