Hydrotech™ Drumfilter is a patented filtration technology that offers up to 98% suspended solids removal for many wastewater and drinking water applications.
Overview
Hydrotech™ Drumfilter is a self-cleaning, mechanical filtration system specially designed for suspended solids removal in high throughput water treatment installations.
It is suitable for use in multiple applications, including stormwater management, industrial and municipal wastewater treatment and raw water inflows at drinking water treatment plants.
It uses a combination of high-quality materials and patented processes resulting in a market-leading filtration system with over 7,000 units sold worldwide.
How does Hydrotech Drumfilter work?
Hydrotech Drumfilter uses a microscreen filter and has demonstrated 98% effectiveness in suspended solids removal. It allows continuous filtration during the backwash of the filter screens, so no external water source is required.
Influent flows by gravity into the center of the drum, passing through the filtration media. Solid particles are separated from the water due to the specially designed, patented cell structure of the filter panels.
As solids accumulate on the drum filter panels, the water level rises, triggering a level sensor that automatically initiates the filters' backwashing. The backwash nozzles wash solids off the filtration media using filtered water while the drum rotates.
Hydrotech Drumfilter works without pressure and full filtration capacity is continuously maintained and automatically controlled, even during backwash. It is robustly designed with few moving parts to ensure long life and low maintenance costs.
Solids are collected in the sludge tray and transported out of the system by gravity through the sludge/backwash outlet for further treatment.
Hydrotech Drumfilter unique construction
The drum is constructed in sections, each with up to six filter panels, depending on the diameter. The unique filter panels simplify both the replacement and change out of the filters.
This helps maintenance and makes it easy to adapt the filter to the flow capacity and performance requirements of filtration. The drum and tank are made of stainless or acidproof steel. For extremely corrosive surroundings, special alloys or titanium is used.
The filter panel structure, bearing wheels, and main shaft bearing are made of resistant plastics and the filter cloth is made of polyester or stainless steel.

FAQ about Hydrotech Drumfilter
What are suspended solids in water treatment?
Suspended solids in water treatment are tiny, undissolved particles that float in water, including silt, organic matter, microorganisms and industrial waste.
They can be classified as settleable (heavier particles that sink) or non-settleable (lighter particles that stay suspended). Removing suspended solids is essential to improve water clarity, reduce turbidity and lower biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).
Why is suspended solids removal important?
Total suspended solids (TSS) is a key water quality indicator, measured by filtering and weighing solids in a water sample. Effective removal of suspended solids protects aquatic life, ensures regulatory compliance and enhances downstream treatment processes.
What can water treatment plant managers do to select the best suspended solids removal filtration system for their needs?
Plant managers should assess influent water quality, including turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), and particle size distribution, to identify suitable removal methods.
They should evaluate system capacity, peak flow rates and scalability for future demand and consider maintenance needs, automation for backwashing and cleaning and regulatory compliance.
Selecting a system with low energy consumption, minimal downtime and reliable supplier support reduces operational costs. A total cost of ownership analysis helps ensure the most cost-effective, efficient, and long-term solution for solids removal.
Our experts will help you ensure performance and sustainability without compromise. They will help you make an informed decision and give you peace of mind thanks to effective filtration, reduced downtime, and long-term cost savings.
Case Studies

Oatly, a Swedish plant-based food company, faced challenges meeting strict effluent requirements due to its environmental permit and proximity to a nature reserve. The company needed a wastewater treatment plant that could achieve high reductions in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), phosphorus and nitrogen. Hydrotech Drumfilters provide the solution ensuring effluent polishing as the final step before discharge. The filters meet stringent requirements, operate 24/7, and are cleaned chemically and with high pressure weekly. This helps Oatly maintain sustainability standards and comply with environmental regulations.
